API demand: aviation enters the radar
This insight is open to all subscribers and registered users, or available by completing the form.
The commercialisation of mobile network APIs has moved from early-stage exposure to wider distribution. Aggregators are playing a key role, targeting high-priority sectors. Understanding demand in different industries is important for operators, channel/distribution partners and developers. GSMA Intelligence’s Network API demand index report established a structured way to measure where API value is likely to concentrate across industries based on addressable revenue, demand signals and barriers.
The index now includes aviation as a dedicated vertical. This is timely, considering the growing interest from airports, airlines and low-altitude aviation ecosystems in programmable network capabilities. In aviation, demand is increasingly distributed across ground, airside and in-flight environments, making it one of the most strategically important, and potentially commercially valuable, API opportunities in the index.

Network API demand index: a vertical-sector view
Monetisation is the key objective in 2026 for telcos on APIs (as with other business lines) and their distribution partners, with the implications for go-to-market strategies being different depending on the API and buyer. It is important to quantify the commercial potential and buying likelihood of APIs across different sectors of the economy to accurately orient supply. To that end, GSMA Intelligence has developed the Open Gateway Demand Index, which aggregates a range of metrics to help understand where demand lies and the commercial opportunity for network APIs in each sector.
