Monetisation is the key objective in 2026 for telcos on APIs (as with other business lines) and their distribution partners, with the implications for go-to-market strategies being different depending on the API and buyer. It is important to quantify the commercial potential and buying likelihood of APIs across different sectors of the economy to accurately orient supply. To that end, GSMA Intelligence has developed the Open Gateway Demand (OGD) Index, which aggregates a range of metrics to help understand where demand lies and the commercial opportunity for network APIs in each sector.

The scores generated by the OGD Index reveal notable differences between industry sectors in monetisation potential of network APIs. Banking and financial services is at the top of the ranking, followed by media and entertainment and healthcare. Retail and manufacturing round out the top five. The disparity between the top and bottom sectors is evident. Banking and financial services achieved a score of nearly 79, reflecting substantially stronger revenue potential and greater readiness for network API adoption. In contrast, the lowest‑ranking sector, agriculture, forestry and fishing, scored 59, indicating a considerably lower level of near‑term opportunity
