This Spotlight is the latest in a research series in partnership with Dell and Intel on the use of edge compute and RAN as part of sustainability strategy. Following the publication of The next generation of operator sustainability and Spotlights on open RAN and edge compute, here we take a wider view of how vendors and other suppliers can help operators with pain points around energy efficiency along the network stack.

The huge rise in mobile data traffic forecast over the remainder of the decade means both edge and cloud compute will have to handle higher capacity loads. How best to increase the energy efficiency of those parts of the network? How far along are technical innovations in the edge and cloud compared to the radio network? How best to coordinate among what is often a raft of suppliers?

As well as exploring these questions below, GSMA Intelligence will be at MWC Barcelona 2024 to discuss them in more detail, including at the Sustainability Summit on 28 February 2024.
