SMS OTP and network APIs: defending today’s revenues, capturing tomorrow’s growth

This insight is open to all subscribers and registered users, or available by completing the form.
Mobile operators face a defining moment in authentication. SMS one-time password (OTP) remains widely used and commercially important, but fraud, rising costs and competition from passkeys and app-based solutions are weakening its position. At the same time, the customer authentication market is growing. This presents operators with an opportunity to build on the reach and trust of the mobile number to secure a larger role in a rapidly expanding market. API-based solutions will be central to this.
The GSMA Open Gateway Number Verification API enables enterprises to confirm that the number provided by a user matches the number in use by their mobile device, without requiring an OTP. This eliminates the need for OTP codes and limits exposure to SMS delivery failures and AIT. Moreover, its silent nature allows it to act as a low-friction network signal, adding additional security, in journeys where an SMS would not otherwise have been sent, extending the opportunity beyond direct OTP replacement.
