A three-way showdown in 2023: 5G standalone, 5G-Advanced and 6G
It is well understood that running multiple network generations is a burden on operators. Add to that a future focus on diverse technology evolutions and the problem could be exponentially worse, even if some are still years away. While this might have been a theoretical concern in the past, it's likely to come to the fore in 2023 as 5G standalone (SA), 5G-Advanced and 6G all clamour for attention.
The green generation: bridging 5G and 6G
This report is the second in a two-part series from GSMA Intelligence in partnership with Microsoft on the sustainable design and operation of telecoms networks in the 5G era. It explores the energy implications of a broad shift in computing workloads to the cloud and, in the context of enterprise digitisation, edge computing using both 5G and localised datacentres.
MWC22 Barcelona Snapshot: 5G and 6G
In this snapshot, GSMA Intelligence examines the key announcements and innovations in 5G and 6G at MWC22, and what they mean for the industry. For the full analysis of topics covered at MWC22, see "MWC22 Barcelona: insights beyond the headlines".
5G-Advanced: the near-term remedy to 6G hype
If operators are planning for 6G to make a commercial appearance sometime around 2030 but recognise that 5G improvements will be realised before then, it stands to reason that a mid-point advancement is coming. With an expected arrival in 2025, that advancement is 5G-Advanced. What 5G-Advanced will deliver will reflect operator expectations of network demands in the medium term, as well as the mobile network innovations and messaging we can expect to hear about over the next few years.
