Satellite and NTN tracker, Q2 2024

This report is available to those subscribed to the IoT & Enterprise or Mobile Operators and Networks modules.
Telco-satellite convergence has become an industry-wide movement rather than the niche strategy it used to be. 91 individual telecoms operators now have signed partnerships with satellite companies to provide services through distribution agreements. This is a market shift from the telco perspective, with satellite increasingly viewed as a pragmatic means of network extension and access to revenue streams – both consumer and B2B/IoT – not otherwise economically feasible. In aggregate, the partnerships cover a mobile subscriber base of around 5 billion people, equivalent to 60% of global market share, and cover backhaul and direct-to-device service. 45% of the live or planned services from telcos involve direct-to-cell capabilities (the other 55% provide backhaul to mobile base stations).
This report is the first in a new quarterly series that will track data and developments from telcos and satellite companies in pursuit of monetisation in the consumer, B2B and government sectors.

Satellite and NTN tracker, Q3 2025
Q3 2025 saw further trials of direct-to-device (D2D) offerings from telcos, with Rogers in Canada the latest to launch. Examining the trials, it is clear that initial services will focus on SMS and, in some cases, voice. Both are low bandwidth and within the bounds of the spectral capacity available.
Satellite and NTN tracker, Q2 2025
The entry of Amazon’s Kuiper represented the biggest competitive development in the satellite space in Q2 2025. This is set against the backdrop of 2025 being a key year for the commercialisation of telco-satellite partnerships.
MWC Shanghai 2025: a window into the future?
MWC Shanghai is in the books for another year, having attracted 45,000 visitors (from 12,500 companies), along with 400 exhibitors and partner groups. The numbers were up from the 2024 event by 13% and 92% respectively. This analysis highlights the key takeaways and implications from meetings, summits and announcements at the event – and in particular, whether the progress seen in China can be mapped to other regions.
