Preparing enterprises for 5G security risks
Pages

Released
JULY 2020

In the 5G era, security risks are greater than before because of the combination of cloud, data and IoT security threats and the potential wider societal impacts. However, many enterprises deploying IoT and 5G are still uncertain of their security risk tolerance and, unless they are risk aware, will overestimate the business benefits of 5G that they are testing for. Operators have an opportunity to help enterprises become resilient, as they can offer both advisory services to help enterprises identify risks, and security metrics for monitoring and responding to risks. According to our Operators in Focus Survey 2020, there is a clear link between security-related investments and B2B success for operators; based on results in 2019, the uplift from security revenue for operators could be up to 10%.

IoT in a post-quantum world: coming sooner than you think

Topics

Internet of things (IoT)

The benefits of quantum computing come from the order-of-magnitude increase in computational power compared to conventional computers. This enables a range of use cases from predictive analytics to pharmaceutical simulations. However, there are also risks, primarily related to security vulnerabilities. Overall, we estimate around 8% of IoT devices currently in active use are quantum safe. Conversely, over 90% (i.e. nearly all) of IoT devices are exposed. The exposure risk for telcos comes at multiple levels, including networks, billing systems, consumer devices and IoT. The focus in this report is on the IoT dimension because it represents the largest universe of devices, is highly disparate and is particularly open to security risks due to the ageing nature of many assets deployed today.
