Following our previous collaboration with the GSMA's Development Fund, we are very pleased to announce the second of our two tools that aim to track certain developments on the services side of the mobile ecosystem.

The GSMA's Mobile Money for the Unbanked (MMU) project primarily aims to accelerate the availability of mobile money services to the unbanked and those living on less than US$2 per day.

MMU have drawn on the GSMA Intelligence platform of data to offer a global visualisation of deployments that offer a financial service via a mobile phone (i.e money transfer, bill payments, savings, microcredit, etc.) to the unbanked or under-banked population in developing countries. The tracking includes both projects lead by mobile operators themselves, or those that are non-MNO lead and who use the mobile network as a conduit for their service.

Mobile Money Deployment Tracking

White bubbles show all countries in the world falling under the MMU remit (those with a GDP under US$15,000) - clicking on these will show the financial characteristics of each market. Red bubbles additionally highlight the countries with active commercially launched mobile money deployments. Clicking on these will load market-level data as well as information about each deployment and its partners.

We and the MMU team welcome any feedback on the tool or its data - which is fully exportable into Excel or the Google Earth desktop application itself.
