In Q2 2007, the Middle East is to pass the 150 million connections mark as well as 50% penetration rate. With market growth of 30% in 2006, the Middle East is the second fastest-growing region in the global cellular market. The region is a mix of mature markets such as Kuwait and Israel, and fast growing markets with low penetration rates such as Afghanistan and Iran. 97% of total connections in the region are based on GSM networks whilst WCDMA services are slowly ramping up as coverage and handset affordability improve.
