5G networks unwrapped: keeping an open mind

Wireless networks on open standards and architectures have been gathering steam for several years. This includes high-profile efforts to rethink how to build the radio access network (RAN), separating out radio and digital components, and (hopefully) introducing competition, innovation and supply-chain diversity in the process. More broadly, we see a focus on openness in core activities, including how networks are operated and how edge-computing capabilities are built. While the cancellation of MWC removed a major industry showcase for the latest and greatest mobile networks innovations, products that would have been launched were still released and promoted. Amid the flurry of activity, one message was clear: open infrastructure and architectures are gaining ground as we move deeper into the 5G era.

A target architecture for telecoms cybersecurity
This white paper, using evidence from a GSMA Intelligence survey of operators in Asia Pacific, explains why traditional perimeter-based security is no longer enough and what operators need to do to build a more resilient, architecture-led approach. It covers how AI is changing the threat landscape; why expanding attack surfaces require stronger governance; and how native security, depth defence, dual security operation centre (SOC) operations and AI-enabled tools can help operators protect critical networks.
GSMA Open Gateway: State of the Market, H1 2026
This latest edition of the GSMA Open Gateway research series provides an update on the state of the market, recent developments and examples of Open Gateway in action. The market is increasingly moving away from operator-specific API exposure and towards platform-mediated distribution, where developers prefer a single integration point with global reach. This changes the commercial dynamic for the ecosystem.
Efficient operator scale in European mobile markets
European mobile markets are undergoing a structural shift: rising data usage, declining revenue per user, saturating subscriber penetration and sustained investment requirements have made operator scale increasingly important. Europe remains the least concentrated major mobile region in the world, with operators being structurally subscale compared to global peers. This gap has widened during precisely the period when scale matters most.
