Going green: can 5G be energy efficient?
GSMA, GSMA Intelligence and operators present a new tool quantifying network energy consumption
Sustained cost pressures and commitments to net zero in support of the 2015 Paris Agreement have made energy efficiency a strategic priority for many telecoms operators around the world. This is a long-term story. As mobile data traffic continues to grow dramatically with the rise of LTE smartphones and the expansion of 5G, energy consumption is consequently increasing. To help provide an evidence base for measuring progress, GSMA and GSMA Intelligence partnered with a group of operators to develop an Energy Efficiency Benchmarking tool.
Early findings include that 73% of the energy consumption of participating operators is consumed on the radio access network (RAN).
Join GSMA’s Head of Climate Action, analysts from GSMA Intelligence and operators as they discuss findings from the Energy Benchmarking tool, explore how networks consume energy and how site, RAN and network-wide innovations can help boost efficiency to help operators achieve their emissions targets.
Speakers include:
- Steven Moore, Head of Climate Action, GSMA
- Tim Hatt, Head of Research & Consulting, GSMA Intelligence
- Emanuel Kolta, Senior Analyst, GSMA Intelligence
- Gerard Ortines, Senior Director, Globe Telecom
- Wiktor Tomasz Barcicki, Senior Director, Technology Analysis, Etisalat
