UAVs: commercial applications and the opportunity for mobile operators

This report is available to those subscribed to the IoT & Enterprise module.
Advancements in drone capabilities, wider availability of hardware, and affordable equipment pricing mean uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) are moving towards early commercial adoption. The UAV ecosystem broadly expects the market to move to mainstream from 2025.
Mobile network operators have opportunities with strong monetisation prospects. However, few mobile operators have detailed a comprehensive strategy. To be ready in two to three years, they need to act now.
In early 2023, GSMA Intelligence conducted a global survey of 25 UAV ecosystem players on market trends, challenges and opportunities. Leveraging GSMA Intelligence research into mobile operator network investment plans (5G-Advanced and 6G) and drone strategies, this report presents survey insights across areas including revenue opportunities, challenges and timelines for wider adoption, and expected roles and services for telcos. The report also presents several case studies of telecoms operators in the UAV ecosystem.

Connectivity trends in robotics: 5G and cellular IoT are only just emerging
From a telecoms perspective, robotics was recognised early on as a key future use case during the planning and rollout of 5G around seven years ago. With 5G-Advanced now commercially deployed in early-adopter countries, it is timely to evaluate 5G’s real-world impact on robotics. We also explore how complementary technologies such as edge computing, IoT and eSIM are shaping the connectivity landscape.
The next five years of IoT: revenue opportunities and recommendations for growth
The global IoT market will reach $2 trillion in revenues by 2030, but what are the drivers shaping revenue growth and the recommendations for IoT companies looking to capitalise on the opportunity ahead?
IoT revenue forecast to 2030: charting growth by region, vertical and product
