Reading the indicators: tech industry turns to automotive

Released
JULY 2021

2021 has seen growing enthusiasm in the automotive sector from tech industry players, including network vendors and smartphone manufacturers. Several companies have signalled their intention to make cars (e.g. Baidu, Xiaomi) or established partnerships to develop new driving technologies (e.g. Foxconn, Huawei). Macro-level issues such as combatting climate change and moderating supply chain risks, alongside pressures to innovate and diversify, have aroused interest in the sector.

To that end, the future will see accelerated convergence and integration between automotive and mobile technologies, particularly as 5G connectivity becomes more ingrained in society. Although there are clear opportunities in automotive for firms from across the tech ecosystem (including mobile operators), success will require patience and the right partnerships.
