IoT in business: Enterprise views on solution requirements

JUNE 2019

With 65% of enterprises (SMEs and larger enterprises) having already deployed an IoT solution, it’s clear that IoT is happening, but the devil is in the detail. Our latest report on the findings from our IoT Enterprise Survey looks specifically at the components enterprises are sourcing as part of their deployments. Security features front and centre, which is no surprise given our respondents highlighted it as a key barrier to adoption. Data analytics is already heavily entrenched in current deployments, but looks set to become even more ubiquitous given the increasing trend for enterprises looking to deploy predictive analytics. When it comes to connectivity, there is no clear winner in terms of technology – we see a mix of technologies being deployed which highlights the varying coverage, capacity, and legacy integration requirements that enterprises face. What’s also clear is that enterprises’ focus is on solving a particular business need with IoT, rather than zeroing in on technology and connectivity choices, and this is where suppliers can support.

It is important to quantify the commercial potential and buying likelihood of APIs across different sectors of the economy to accurately orient supply. To that end, GSMA Intelligence has developed the Open Gateway Demand Index, which aggregates a range of metrics to help understand where demand lies and the commercial opportunity for network APIs in each sector.
