During the first half of 2008, the Americas exceeded the 400 million cellular connections mark, bringing the region as a whole up to 72% penetration by population. The top five markets (Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela) accounted for 312 million connections alone, 76% of the regional aggregate. The Caribbean islands, comprising 24 markets, represent 3% of all connections in the Americas.

Amidst the region’s highlights, incumbent operators are performing well although competition for smaller operators is fierce. Consolidation (particularly in Brazil) is closing competition while regulators hope to open up further spectrum with next-generation licence auctions for new and existing operators alike.
