Sub-Saharan Africa is seeing growing momentum behind 5G, with 27 operators in 16 markets offering commercial 5G services in the region as of September 2023. Operators in 10 additional countries are expected to launch in the coming years. GSMA Intelligence estimates more than 226 million mobile connections in the region will be 5G by 2030, accounting for 17% of total mobile connections.

FWA is also emerging as an important use case for 5G, providing an opportunity to enhance last-mile connectivity for home broadband services and to service the needs of vertical industries.

This spotlight examines the implications ahead for the ecosystem as 5G expands its reach and role in Sub-Saharan Africa.
