5G in live sports: augmenting the fan experience

With the rollout of 5G, the transformation of the sports fan experience has begun. The implementation of 5G will require the widespread adoption of 5G devices but once in effect fans will be able to watch high-quality VR videos, enjoy a greater variety and volume of content, and see games from completely new perspectives. For sports leagues, the focus will be on developing a deeper relationship with fans, especially via new networking technologies, and attracting a younger, more digital audience.

The wider sports ecosystem will also continue to expand: the use of 5G will cultivate digital analytics companies, IoT vendors and those with AR/VR expertise, among others. For mobile operators, the 5G testing stage will include building up brand recognition, experimenting with new business models and creating dedicated in-stadium areas to allow for end-to-end immersive reality experiences. Alongside traditional broadcasters, digital OTTs such as Facebook and Amazon are entering the sports rights game. These digital platforms are looking to reinvent broadcasting in a more immersive, social format.
