5G pricing tactics attempt to gauge consumer demand

As regulators assign vital spectrum, operators publicise deployment plans and 5G networks go live, we are now seeing early indications of how the industry will attempt to monetise and recoup investments in next-generation mobile connectivity. Verizon, SKT, KT and LG U+ were first to launch tariffs for 5G, often with promotions as they test consumer appetite at certain price points. For consumers, initial premiums may not signal longer term pricing as 5G launches accelerate and competition intensifies. Operators will be keen observers of the reaction to the frontrunners’ plans, particularly the bundling of 5G with additional, potentially income-generating, services.
