UK outlines strategy for 5G future

In July 2018, the UK government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) published its strategy for the country’s next-generation telecoms networks. In launching the Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR), the government outlined its ambition to make world-class digital connectivity widely available across the UK – and to do so “at pace”. To that end, the government is eager for the UK to be at the forefront of 5G and is aiming for rollout to reach the majority of the country by 2027.

However, meeting the review’s objectives will require the appropriate policy setting and strong collaboration across industry, while DCMS has indicated that consolidation could be an option if investment levels are lacking.
