Cellular M2M forecasts and assumptions: 2010-2020

Unlocking the M2M opportunity through collaboration and interoperability

Data for [cellular M2M connections][1] is now available in GSMA Intelligence with historic operator-level data available from 2010 and forecasts through to 2020. In parallel with the launch of this new data set we present our findings and assumptions in our latest report.

Our findings show that global cellular M2M connections are currently set to reach close to one billion by 2020. However we calculate that the market base could be double that if a number of growth factors are successfully enabled by industry players and governments in the short to medium term.

This report outlines the assumptions behind our current forecast and outlines the potential of different growth stimulators and the impact they could have on our forecast scenario for the cellular M2M market. We examine the role of government and regulatory initiatives on vertical sectors such automotive, compliance reporting, smart metering and healthcare. Operators' M2M business models are explored with recommendations on how to move beyond simply providing the mobile connectivity component of the M2M value proposition.
